Looking for new story ideas, or just a fun drawing activity to do with friends (current or future)…? Try a creative, refreshing “COMICS JAM”!
The venerable “COMICS JAM” is one of my favorite ways to jump-start totally new & surprising stories. We’re “jamming” a LOT this summer @ our library sessions… It works great in large groups, or just 1-on-1.
SINGLE PAGE, FOLDED:
This is a great way to work w/ younger groups; It’s easier for new artists to focus on the developing artwork & storyline when the panels are already laid out simply & clearly!
This format also works well in virtual sessions. Below are some 4-panel jams drawn w/ story ideas from (remote) school groups!:
SAMPLE 8-PAGE “1-Sheet” COMICS JAMS:
STARTING WITH A TITLE:
My pal Eben Burgoon does a Comics Jam workshop where everybody starts with a different randomly-selected title.
There are several other variants I’d like to post here…
What are YOUR favorite twists on the Comics Jam model?
These pages will appear in upcoming editions of the COMICS WORKSHOP HANDBOOK.
