Diary Comics: “What if we draw blank boxes?”

Drawn one frosty morning in my Katahdin 2025 Sketchbook:


Nothing revolutionary here — I simply noticed that after a long day on the trail, WRITING in my journal just wasn’t very attractive (or even accessible)… It felt overwhelming to string bunches of WORDS together in coherent sentences, or even bulleted lists!

I tried composing sentences in my head DURING the day, but that felt even harder to create AND remember. I guess my hiking-brain doesn’t work like that:

Although, I noticed that having a structure — Like LINES & RHYTHMS & RHYMES in poetry — actually does make composition & memorization possible! (Sometimes.)

So maybe that’s all we’re doing when we draw comics — Finding poetic grouping & rhythm, where structure intersects with meaning…

Drawing out blank boxes just makes it all seem more accessible to me, anyhow:

Each box is like a little niche, which an idea can come & inhabit…

    1. Ooh, I like the idea of text in one box & image in another… Like title cards in an old silent movie!
      Sometimes I even use this just to organize my writing. There’s something visual about writing into panels like this, whether I draw anything or not. ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ
